Introduction
The symposia have always been important linguistic, scientific and artistic events for the development of projects and have brought with them considerable advances in knowledge.
The 28th Soyfer Symposion 2019 is characterized above all by the fact that decades of transdisciplinary achievements are prepared for a broad, Austrian and international use. In addition, there are an edition, translations in about 50 languages, essays, scientific articles, documentaries of projects (theatre performances, radio plays, films, etc.).
Furthermore, the focus is on fake news (lies), hatred, etc., which were essential elements of Nazi propaganda. Although there is now a public sensitivity towards the Lingua Tertii Imperii, but not towards the structures of communication:
•The irrationalism (including: denial of scientific results)
•The hostility to art
•The transformation of people into numbers
•Enforcement of lies in the form of social structures (e.g. deletion of funds for scientific associations and artists)
•Etc.
Soyfer has revealed a great deal in this context. He has not only dealt with the language of National Socialism, but – as in his plays „End of the World“ and „Astoria“ – with the communication structures.
Especially today this is understood and is currently being taken up mainly in theatre projects, but also in scientific analyses.
It will therefore be necessary both to work out the historical and, as in the case of the Lingua Tertii Imperii, to reject such structures. The question is whether these structures are not also subject to the prohibitions of existing laws.
At the same time, however, it is also a question of making visible the creativity, the innovations of a young generation that Soyfer sees as its poet.
The concept of transdisciplinary symposiumtion is such that scientific contributions are presented and discussed. But it is also about the presentation of artistic works, the discussion of projects – in German and/or English.
Participants
A number of well-known, but also still very young scientists and artists from a dozen countries have announced their participation. Among these:
Wiss.Dir.Dr. Herbert Arlt (Vienna): Fake News, digitalisation, the arts and science
Arlt got especially for his commitment for Jura Soyfer since more than 40 years the highest decoration for science of the Republic of Austria: http://www.arltherbert.at/ehrenkreuz/
Univ. Prof.Dr. Knut Ove Arntzen (Bergen): Fake, the arts and politics – About the new authenticity and the „Notfallsgeschehen“
It refers to the concept of new authenticity with the play of „faking or not faking“. This was created in the late 1990s and early 2000s. At that time, art sometimes referred to the play with the truth, as did Atlas Group and Rabih Roué from Lebanon. Then came the wave of cover-up and this game was steered towards subversion by fake news, and has left the artistic domain.
Prof. Martin Auer (Vienna): The rational within the irrational
Auer is one of the pioneers of Internet literature. The contribution will be about explaining phenomena such as xenophobia, racism, „hatred on the net“, anti-Semitism, etc., with „prejudices“, „need for belonging and demarcation“ and other psychologists Argumentation irgnoring the political context.
MMag. Ruslana Berndl (Vienna): A Sunday in Strasbourg)
For 9 years Ruslana Berndl worked on this film about Ukrainian forced laborers in Germany and Austria. These are stories of people in today’s Ukraine who have meanwhile died. Berndl confronts These memories with propaganda films about this kind of forced labour in Germany and Austria and the return to the Soviet Union, where they were received with suspicion. People who worked not only in the field, in factories, but also exposed to the brutality of concentration camps. The documentary film also recollect about resistance, about humanity, friendship, love. The simple and impressive stories remember the deportations, the degrading, the hunger, the torments, but they are also connected with elements of art (poetics, songs, music). Strong images of ordinary people in their difficult everyday life in today’s Ukraine, who face historical images.
Dr. Hartmut Cellbrot (Aachen): „Der Wiener Tag“, Supplement „Der Sonntag“ in the times of Fake News
The article will address the importance of „Der Sonntag“ (a Supplement of a Viennese newspaper in the 1930ies)and Jura Soyfer’s contribution for the supplement, as well as authors who wrote for „Der Sonntag“, such as F. X. Salda, who is printed in 1937 with an astonishing text in which he advocates peaceful coexistence with the Sudeten German pleads, speaks out against all forms of nationalism and opposes a speech of a Henlein, which is shaped by slogans, and draws out intercultural and transcultural perspectives. Salda is also a co-founder of a Czech modernity, which is based on an emphatic concept of truth, interesting, related to Viennese modernism.
Ass. Prof. in Dr. in Rania Elwardy (Cairo): The contribution of the science and art of Soyfer to the birth of the new man and the new society in the Arab states after the spring revolutions
Rania Elwardy translated Soyfer into Arabic and distributed his texts. She will talk about how the scientific discussion on Soyfer promotes cultural dialogue between Western and Eastern researchers about the new man and the new society. Moreover, art promotes the understanding of the Arab peoples for the importance of the new man and the importance of the new society.
Univ.Prof.in Dr.in Fatima Festic (Amsterdam): Dispersive Performativity and Internationalization of Ethnic Injury
She will discuss the main concerns of this year Soyfer Symposium as related to the modes of communication of traumatic events and the responses of belief/disbelief, and tune that to her current project on dispersion, which comparatively explores the cultural manifestations of disconnecting from ethnic groups after traumatic events, and specifically the movement from Croatia and from Bosnia-Herzegovina within the European continent in/after the 1990s.
Doris Kaiser (Mainz): Weltuntergang – Theaterprojekt an der Maria Ward-Schule Mainz
Dr. Hartmut Krones (Vienna): Zur kompositorischen Rezeption von Jura Soyfer: Tiefe Trauer in den Liedern des Emigranten Marcel Rubin und „fake news“ in der Oper „Weltuntergang“ von Wilhelm Zobl
He is the specialist for Soyfer and Music and organized together with the Jura Soyfer Society a Symposion about Soyfer, Music, Theatre, Resistance.
Olha Kryvosheieva will present the current performance of Soyfer’s play „The End of the World“ in Kharkiv | Kharkov in Ukraine.
Ilja Mirsky (Tübingen) | Franziska Jakobi (Hamburg): nakt INTERFEST – Das Hamburger Soyfer Projekt
Ass.Prof.in Dr.in Dilek Nergis Altinkaya (Izmir) translates Jura Soyfer Projects in the tradition of Univ.Prof.in Dr.in Gertrude Durusoy (+) in Izmir and organizes very interesting Soyfer projects (University Seminars etc.).
Univ. Prof. in Dr. in Alessandra Schininà (Ragusa, Catania in Italy): „Ah, die Wahrheit ist in gute Haend!“ Journalism und Journalists in Soyfers literary work
She wrote her first scientific work on Soyfer already in the 1980s. Since then she presented the results of her analysis in Austria, Italy, USA and different other countries.
Univ.Prof.Dr. Aoussine Seddiki (Aïn Khedidja | Mers El Kebir): Der gesellschaftliche Diskurs im Theaterspiegel. Soyfers Schriften als Beispiel
Further projects from Vienna, Hamburg, Izmir, Mainz etc. are to be added.
What is important: this Symposion is not just about Soyfer as Soyfer, but about the tradition of fake news and its reality today. But it is also important that Soyfer shows in „Astoria“ for example, how art can be an antithesis.
