I would like to use the problem of gender-based harm in South Africa as a starting point to address the problem of the liberation of women in Africa. This problem is not only typical of South Africa, but of many countries around the world. As a point of reference, I consider the books by the cultural scientist Pumla Gqola, Rape and The Female Fear Factory. There seems to be a special relationship between apartheid and violence against women, which continues even after the end of apartheid. Women’s literature is a means of drawing attention to the problem and pointing out possibilities of liberation. Examples are Barbara Boswell and Tsitsi Dangarembga.
